New Jersey Rep. Chris Smith at March for Life: ‘Pro-Abortion Culture’ Is a ‘Modern-Day Flat Earth Society’

The co-chair of the Congressional Pro-Life Caucus told thousands of advocates for life on the National Mall in Washington, DC, that the “pro-abortion culture of denial” is a “modern-day flat earth society” that “continues to deny, devalue, and disrespect unborn baby girls and boys and trivialize the harm suffered by women.”

On Friday, Representative Chris Smith (R-NJ) spoke at the 50th annual March for Life – the first since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.

“The United States—and the world—must recognize the breathtaking miracle of the newly created life of an unborn child and that women deserve better than abortion,” Smith said, stressing the need for the pro-life community to care for both unborn babies and their mothers.

The congressman said Americans who boast about the nation’s focus on human rights will cause future citizens to actually question our values when they consider the prevalence of abortion:

Future generations will someday look back on us and wonder how and why a society that bragged about its commitment to human rights could have legally sanctioned and aggressively promoted child beheadings, dismemberment, chemical poisoning, and forced expulsion from the womb.

Smith noted he and his pro-life colleagues in the House passed both a bill to protect children who survive an abortion and a resolution to demand that acts of violence, terrorism, and vandalism against pregnancy care centers, churches and pro-life offices be investigated and the perpetrators prosecuted.

“And in the coming weeks, the House will vote on the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act—the latest Knight-Marist poll shows that 60% of Americans oppose using tax dollars to fund abortion domestically,” he said.

Looking to the future, Smith said “a new national debate on abortion has begun as lawmakers on the state level act quickly to protect children in the womb when a heartbeat can be detected at around 6 weeks or when the child suffers excruciating physical pain from the abortion procedure at 15 weeks.”

“A number of local elected representatives are establishing pro-life sanctuary cities,” he observed as well.

In an op-ed Friday at the Washington Times, Smith also referred to Joe Biden as “the abortion president,” and observed Biden’s moves “aggressively promoting abortion on demand at home and overseas through executive orders, pro-abortion pressure disguised as diplomacy, and by giving billions of dollars to abortion organizations.”

“The injustice of abortion need not be forever and with your continued work and prayers, it will not be,” Smith said.
